Benefits Of Quinoa For Babies

Quinoa is popular as a ‘super food’ all over the world! Pronounced ‘keen-wa’, quinoa is a great alternative to starchy grains. It is available in two types- creamy white and red, both of which taste slightly bitter when cooked.

IS IT GOOD TO FEED QUINOA TO BABIES?

Well, answer to this question is YES. Quinoa can be served to babies. However, it is suggested to feed this grain to babies of age 8-10 months. Even though, there are fewer allergic reactions associated with quinoa, it is still advised not to serve it for babies below 8 months, as it is difficult for them to digest. When baby crosses 8 months, his or her digestive system would be good enough to digest quinoa.

BENEFITS OF QUINOA FOR BABIES

In this section, I am discussing some benefits of quinoa for babies. Read on.

Rich in vitamins: Natural quinoa is a great source of vitamins including niacin, thiamin, vitamin B-6, pantothenic acid, riboflavin, vitamin E and folate. All these vitamins play a vital role in healthy growth of babies.

Filled with proteins: Quinoa is one among the pseudo-cereals or cereals that contain good amounts of protein. Even though there are some other foods that have high protein content, yet the proteins in quinoa have essential amino acids. The amino acids are the ones that cannot be produced by the body and hence need to supplement from food sources.

Natural laxative: The high fibre content of quinoa makes it a natural laxative. It has an insoluble fibre and, therefore, it promotes bowel movement. The free bowel movement can reduce gas, flatulence and helps in maintaining healthy digestive system.

Great source of essential minerals: Organic quinoa is a great source of minerals including phosphorous, magnesium, zinc, calcium, iron, potassium, sodium etc. All these minerals promote overall development of the baby. Magnesium, calcium and phosphorous are vital for bone health. While, iron plays a crucial role in the production of haemoglobin that in turn helps in capturing oxygen.

A word of caution

Similar to other foods, quinoa is not a non-allergic food. Sometimes, it may cause allergic reactions. Hence, be extra careful while feeding quinoa to your baby. Primarily, you have to rub and rinse quinoa thoroughly before cooking. Secondarily, closely check if there are any reactions from your baby’s body after eating quinoa. If you observe any subtle or classic symptoms of allergies, immediately stop serving them to your baby and consult your paediatrician. Also, never add any meats, vegetables, broth or vegetables while cooking quinoa.
