A quick review of super bean ‘Soy’- Its health benefits

There is no doubt that soy is nutrition-rich food. Regular intake of soy is associated with many health benefits. In this article I am giving insights on Soy- its food sources & its health benefits.

What is soy?

Soy usually called as Soybeans belongs to legume family that includes, dried peas, chick peas, beans and lentils. Soybeans are believed to be the first foods harvested by human beings. Having origins in Asia, it has been widely grown in China over 13, 000 years.

What are the health benefits of Soy?

The chemical composition of soy and its health effects have been researched from past two decades. Here are some insights:-

Heart health – Consumption of soya rich foods help in reducing the blood fats, regulate blood pressure, boost vascular function.

Fight Menopause – Daily intake of soya (2 to 3 servings) may aid to combat perimenopausal symptoms. One serving is equals to- 125 mL boiled soybeans, 250 mL of soy drink and or 100 g of tofu.

Breast cancer – To prevent breast cancer, one should take soya foods right from the babyhood or teens. Eating soya foods from teenage, doesn’t appear to avoid breast cancer. But for survivors of breast cancer, soy is a recommend food for protein. Variety and fibre.

Range of Soy products

Soy products are diverse and basically made from soya beans. Usually grocery stores sell various types of soy products. After getting idea on all of the varieties, soy becomes a regular food item. Some of the including:-

Tofu– Tofu whether in firm or extra-firm can be used in vegetable soups, stir-fires and pasta sauces. The silken tofu is idea for cooking smooth dips, sauces, soups, shakes and creamy desserts.

Roasted soybeans– To roast soya beans, it should be soaked in water for some time. Roasting can be done in dry heat or oil. Usually fried soy tastes just like peanuts.

Soy drinks– Soys drinks are prepared with ground-up soybeans. The process of grinding gives a liquid which looks like usual milk. This soya milk can be consumed as it is or can be used as a replacement for cow’s milk in breakfast or tea.

Soy is a rich food with complete protein, minerals and vitamins such as potassium, folate and fiber. Over the past years, soy foods are gaining attention of researchers across the globe for health benefits beyond fundamental nutrition as well.
